Italian PM Meloni seeks EU trademark for her voice amid AI deepfake risks
What happened
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has submitted an application to the EU Intellectual Property Office to trademark her voice, including a four-second audio recording of herself repeating her name. The application is still under examination. Her office confirmed the application, which was dated October 5 on the EUIPO website. Italian media reported that approval may not prevent AI-generated deepfakes but could create additional legal hurdles for those replicating her voice.
